Estrangeiras dos Trópicos

Bárbara Lissa

“Amid the painful process of Ukrainians adapting to the losses and uncertainty brought by war, they are still capable of self-reflection, emotional insights, and extreme honesty.”

Foreigners from the Tropics reflects on the ways of inhabiting boundaries. It delves into memories and photographs from Bárbara Lissa maternal family’s albums, shaped by a sense of estrangement toward the recollections and gaps that compose the stories of the women in this lineage. Without schooling or money, they migrated from the countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to the new capital, Belo Horizonte, in the 1970s, at the invitation of a nun relative during a period of rural exodus driven by the country’s industrialization.

Bárbara Lissa is a Brazilian artist-researcher, PhD student in Literary Studies at UFMG, based in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. From photography to audiovisual media, her works are situated at the intersection of art and ecology.
